Jere Karalahti guilty of helping finance the smuggling of amphetamines and cocaine from Estonia into Finland


NHL player Jere Karalahti a 20-month suspended sentence on Thursday for being an accessory in a drug smuggling operation.The Espoo District Court found Karalahti, 32, guilty of helping finance the smuggling of amphetamines and cocaine from Estonia into Finland last year, in a case involving 18 others. He was fined $16,000.
Prosecutors say they will appeal, claiming that Karalahti was directly involved in the smuggling operation. Karalahti denied all charges in the case.Karalahti left the NHL in 2002 after being suspended for six months for his third violation of the league's substance abuse policy. He played 121 games from 2000-02 for the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators.
